Servco2| Fitness for Work – Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What should I do if I don’t feel fit for work?

If you are affected by illness, fatigue, undue stress, alcohol, or drugs, and believe you could be a hazard to yourself or others, do not present for work. Follow the standard notification procedure for leave. If you feel ill or seriously fatigued while on shift, notify your supervisor immediately and do not continue working if it poses a hazard.

  1. What if I’m on medication?
  • Ensure that any prescription or non-prescription medication is taken safely by following these steps:
  • Consult your doctor about potential side effects that may impact your safety or performance at work.
  • Inform your supervisor of any effects the medication may have on your work.
  • Take medication strictly as directed.
  • Report any side effects to both your doctor and your supervisor.

  1. What if I notice someone else who does not appear to be fit for work?

Raise your concerns directly with the individual and notify your immediate manager of any policy breaches, including the presence or consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs on site. All such information must be treated with strict confidentiality.

  1. Where does the company draw the line between a legitimate concern for safety and intrusion into personal privacy?

Servco Australia will only intervene when personal issues have the potential to interfere with job performance, safety in the workplace, or company standards at external events. Personal problems outside of work remain private unless they affect work or safety.

  1. How will my privacy be protected?

Your privacy will be safeguarded in accordance with confidentiality requirements for human resource and medical information. Details will only be shared when necessary for safety, health, or performance on site, and only with written consent unless legally required otherwise.

  1. What happens if there is a gradual deterioration in my fitness for work?

If you suspect or have a problem that could impair your fitness for work, discuss it with your doctor, immediate manager, or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Counsellor as soon as possible. The decision to seek help is your responsibility, though satisfactory evidence of addressing the issue will be required before returning to work. Supervisors or managers may request a discussion in confidence, and you may be accompanied by a work colleague, family member, or health and safety representative. In cases of impairment, a discussion with a medical provider nominated by Servco Head Office may be necessary before returning to work.
